Shane Harris, president of the Prudential Foundation, says she grew up in Newark, NJ, "had a lot of love and support from community leaders...

and I think with that support in nurturing and mentoring, there was also this instilling within young people that there was a responsibility," she tells Steve Adubato of the Newark Star-Ledger.

"Once they were in the position to do so, to give back to the community."

Harris, who grew up in Vailsburg, Colo., and currently lives in Newark's Central Ward with her family, says she's "very much focused on the impact" Prudential's philanthropic work is having in the city.

She says the foundation's mission is "really to provide economic opportunity, particularly for those who have not had that opportunity or have had barriers to creating that opportunity."

The foundation has given more than $100 million to Newark-area nonprofits over the last 15 years, and the Star-Ledger notes that it's been a major force behind efforts to turn around the city's schools, which are more than 30 years old on average.
